Degree fraud has quietly industrialised. Diploma mills sell convincing certificates from institutions that exist only as websites. Real graduates "upgrade" a 2:2 to a first with a PDF editor. And candidates bet, usually correctly, that nobody will ever check with the university.
The three species of credential fraud
- The fictional institution. Diploma mills with authoritative names, active websites, even fake verification hotlines that "confirm" their own certificates. The certificate is real; the university isn't.
- The altered award. A genuine degree with an edited classification, date, or subject. The most common and hardest to spot on paper, because everything except one detail is authentic.
- The unfinished degree. Two years of attendance presented as graduation. Common enough that "attended" vs "awarded" is precisely the distinction verification exists to make.
Why certificate-checking fails
Looking at the certificate, even carefully, validates the paper, not the award. Modern fakes pass visual inspection, and a fake hotline will happily answer your phone call. The only reliable question is asked of the awarding institution itself: did you award this qualification, in this subject, at this classification, on this date, to this person?
Verify the award, not the artwork. The certificate is a claim; the institution's records are the fact.
When it matters most
Education verification earns its place wherever the qualification is the basis of the hire: regulated professions, roles with statutory education requirements, graduate schemes screening at volume, and any senior hire whose credentials will appear in a press release. The reputational maths of a director with a fake MBA is not maths any employer wants to do live.
